Abstract:
This study explores self-directed learning (SDL) strategies used by non
native tour guides at Pangandaran Beach to enhance intercultural communication
skills. Using a qualitative narrative approach, data were collected through semi
structured interviews and analyzed thematically to identify common strategies and
challenges. Findings show that guides employ practical immersion, webinars, and
engagement with cultural communities, while overcoming obstacles like time
constraints, resource access, and diverse accents through practice, technology, and
feedback. The study highlights the relevance of adult learning theories, such as
Knowles’ Andragogy and Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, emphasizing
experiential learning and community engagement in developing intercultural
competence. The research offers insights for improving professional development
programs in tourism and suggests future exploration of digital tools and
collaborative learning to further enhance guides’ skills.
