EFL STUDENTS’ STRATEGIES IN READING PRINTED AND DIGITAL TEXTS (A Case Study of First-Year Students at University in Ciamis)

Abstract

Reading strategies are crucial for EFL students to comprehend texts, both in print and digital formats. This study aimed to identify the reading strategies used by first-year students of the English Education Study Program at a university in Ciamis when reading printed and digital texts. In addition, this study also seeks to identify the challenges they face when using these strategies in two different types of media. This study uses a qualitative case study method. The data collected through observation and interviews with six students selected purposively. The results show that students use various strategies such as skimming, scanning, highlighting important parts, taking notes, using dictionaries, and rereading. These strategies are applied in different ways depending on the format of the text being read. The study also found that students faced challenges such as distractions from notifications, eye strain, difficulty understanding, and technical issues when reading digital texts. Meanwhile, challenges with printed texts included limitations in searching for information and vocabulary difficulties. Although digital texts are more accessible, most students still prefer printed texts because they are considered to support deeper understanding and focus. This study provides important insights for educators to design learning methods that support students in effectively reading both printed and digital texts.
