"THE USE OF BBC SIX MINUTES ENGLISH TO IMPROVE STUDENTS LISTENING COMPREHENSION" (A Case study at One of the Junior High School in Ciamis)

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using “BBC Six Minutes English” as a teaching aid in improving students’ listening skills. A major problem faced in English language learning is the difficulty experienced by many students in understanding English conversation, especially due to variations in accent and intonation. This study used a qualitative method with participants of grade IX students at a school in Malangbong. Data were collected through direct classroom observation and in-depth interviews with students. The results showed that using “BBC Six Minutes English” significantly helped improve students’ listening skills. Students experienced slight improvements in understanding accent and intonation, as well as increased confidence in communicating using English. However, this study also revealed several challenges faced by students, including limited accessibility of materials for those who do not have adequate devices or internet connections, and difficulties in keeping up with the speed and complexity of the language used in the program, especially related to variations in accent. Based on these findings, it is recommended that authentic learning materials such as “BBC Six Minutes English” be more widely integrated into the English language teaching curriculum. In addition, additional support is needed for students who face technical difficulties or have difficulty understanding, for example through the provision of better technology resources or additional mentoring programs. This research is expected to provide a significant contribution to the development of English language teaching methods and become a practical guide for educators in implementing innovative and effective learning resources in the classroom.
