Abstract:
This study aims to find out teacher’s ways in implementing Focus Group
Discussion in teaching speaking and students’ perception on the use of Focus
Group Discussion in learning speaking skill. The study uses qualitative methods
with case study. The study used classroom observation, interview and
questionnaire to answer the research question. The Instruments have been applied
to the English teacher and twenty two students as the sample of this study. The
results of this study proved that the teacher implemented Focus Group Discussion
in teaching speaking. Meanwhile, the students perceived that the strategy was able
to motivate the students to learn English especially in speaking English, decrease
students’ difficulties in leaning speaking, and also increase students’ values in
academic speaking skill. In addition, the students were also active in learning
speaking skill through the use of Focus group discussion. On the other hand, the
researcher provided recommendations to educational institutions, teachers,
students and future researchers if they have the same topic.
