Abstract:
Pronunciation is a fundamental component in English language learning, especially for young learners developing speaking skills. However, pronunciation often receives limited attention in elementary classrooms. While mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) offers promising tools for pronunciation improvement, such as the Studycat app, several studies explore the actual challenges students face when using these apps independently.
This study aims to identify the challenges encountered by elementary students when using the Studycat application to improve their English pronunciation skills. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, involving classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with six fifth-grade students at Elementary school in Tasikmalaya.
The study revealed five key challenges: difficulty understanding native pronunciation, technical barriers, limited vocabulary, over-reliance on visuals, and lack of self-confidence. Despite these, students demonstrated coping strategies such as repeated practice and seeking help. The findings suggest that while Studycat supports pronunciation practice, its effectiveness increases when paired with teacher guidance and structured support.
