Abstract:
Cooperative learning is an essential strategy to equip Indonesian learners to deal with the demands of 21st-century skills. This research discusses the implementation of cooperative learning in teaching speaking. The objective of this research was to investigate how and why the teachers implemented cooperative learning in teaching speaking at a junior high school in Ciamis Regency. This research used a qualitative approach. The participants were an English teacher and twenty students of ninth graders at Junior High School in Ciamis Regency. There were two instruments used by the researcher, namely observation and interviews. This research found the Think-Pair-Share and Small Group were implemented by an English teacher at a Junior High School in Ciamis Regency in teaching speaking. The teacher implemented Cooperative in teaching speaking because it is a very effective solution to overcome problems in teaching speaking. The researchers conclude that the cooperative learning strategy can be applied as a strategy in teaching speaking because it provides many benefits such as improving student achievement, deepening student understanding, making students enjoy and be happy, and developing self-confidence. Finally, the researcher suggests for another researcher that cooperative learning strategies can be integrated into other skills such as listening, writing, and reading.
