Abstract:
This study aims to describe to what extent is zoom meeting effective in
speaking class, and to investigate what are the difficulties of using zoom meeting
faced by students. Case study was used as a research design in this study, with the
participants from fourth semester in the English education program of a university
in Ciamis. Questionnaire, and semi-structured interviews analyses are selected as a
tool for collecting research data. This research was conducted to add a literature
study regarding the effectiveness of zoom meeting as an online learning media in
public speaking class from the students’ perspective. The result of this study is that
the students felt that zoom meeting application was good enough to be applied as
an online learning in speaking class. The students also feel quite memorable in using
the Zoom Meeting application as an online learning media in public speaking class
because the features in the zoom meeting application make it easy for the students
to communicate with the lecturer or the other students. Also, the features of Zoom
Meeting application can make the learning activities colorful, and attractive by
using background filters, face filters, emoji, and the student can send direct
messages to the other student without no one knowing. In using the Zoom Meeting
application, the students feel that there are some difficulties which make the
learning activities uncomfortable. There are the difficulties including consuming a
lot of internet quota, needing so many signals to operate, restrictions on the use of
time, and always other disturbances such as noise from passing vehicles. As a
suggestion the researcher suggests the lecturer to be able to provide a new method
and can control the students during learning activities. Then, for students the
researcher suggests that the students should have more likes, interests, and
participated in speaking practices.
