The research reported in this paper centered to explore the enriching of word
mapping strategy in vocabulary learning and to analyze students and teacher
perception while learning the vocabulary using the word mapping strategy. This
qualitative case study research was conducted in one of the vocational school in
Ciamis. This research involved a tenth-grader consisted of eighteen students and
English teacher in academic year 2020/2021. The data were collected using
classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and a close-ended
questionnaire. The researcher coded, transcribed, and summarized the data with
triangulation data analysis technique. The research finding showed that the teacher
utilized 4 step required the implement word mapping strategy in the teaching and
learning process namely develop the background knowledge, discuss the material,
discuss the strategy. The use of word mapping strategy made the students more
enthusiastic and improved their focus to remember the vocabulary. Additionally, it
improves their motivation to remember every new words in vocabulary. Moreover,
the teacher felt easier to convey the learning materials and classroom atmosphere.
Students also gave a positive atmosphere when the teacher used word mapping
strategy in teaching vocabulary in the degree of comparison material. However both
of the students and the teacher stated that longer treatment with this strategy was
needed by the students to improve their vocabulary skills. Therefore, the future
researcher could be using this strategy with some modifications and adaptations to
improve another skills in English learning |
