Abstract:
This study investigated teaching translation using Molina and Albir’s techniques
to promote students’ best practice in translating at the third grade of English
Education Program in one of Universities in Ciamis. The purposes of this study
were to figure out how the lecturer teaches translation using Molina and Albir’s
techniques to promote students’ best practice in translating and to find out the
kinds of Molina and Albir’s translation techniques which are applied by the
students in translation to promote students’ best practice. A descriptive study was
used as a research design. The writer purposively selected one translation lecturer
and 13 students as the participants. Three instruments in form of the observation,
the questionnaires, and the interview were administered. Triangulation analysis
was used by the writer to triangulate the data. The findings showed that three steps
were applied by the lecturer in teaching translation using Molina and Albir’s
techniques to promote students’ best practice in translating including pre-teaching,
while teaching, and after teaching. It also showed that they applied 13 kinds of
Molina and Albir’s translation techniques in translation to promote their best
practice that were Adaptation, Amplification (Addition), Borrowing, Calque,
Compensation, Description, Discursive Creation, Established Equivalence,
Generalization, Literal Translation, Modulation, Transposition, and Variation. The
conclusions revealed that the lecturer applied three steps in teaching translation
using Molina and Albir’s techniques to promote students’ best practice in
translating. It also revealed that the kinds of Molina and Albir’s translation
techniques which were mostly applied by the students to promote their best
practice were Adaptation, Amplification (Addition), Description, Generalization,
Literal Translation, and Modulation. Based on the conclusions, the lecturers are
suggested to enhance college students’ abilities in using the kinds of translation
techniques in translating language. Besides, college students are suggested to feel
motivated, engaged, and interested in learning and mastering translation
techniques.
