Abstract:
The present study is aimed at to observe the teacher’s way in implementing WhatsApp video call in teaching speaking by role play activity and to investigate the students’ perceptions of the use of WhatsApp video call in teaching speaking by role play activity to improve speaking skills. The present study uses a qualitative case study. Research instruments consist of online classroom observation, interview, and questionnaire. The sample of the present study involved fourteen students of the eighth grade and an English teacher at an Islamic religion-based junior high school in Tasikmalaya as a sample in this research. Thus, the use of WhatsApp video call in teaching speaking by role play activity is effective and improves the students in speaking English. The students' perceptions of the use of WhatsApp video call in teaching speaking by role play activity to improve speaking skills that the students think attractive learning activity, positive activity and easy to used. The data analysis of this study was coding, transcribing and summarizing. Based on the findings, it is recommended for English teachers to apply technology such as WhatsApp and role play techniques, especially in teaching speaking so that the students speaking can be improved.
