Abstract:
This study is aimed at applying Haliday’s theory of functional grammar
approach in students’ short story. It is intended to investigate an analysis
functional grammar on students’ short story. The study used Purposive Sampling
and Document to collected the data. This study used without any participant
because it was focused on analyzed the students’ short story text. The collected
data were analyzed by using Purpossive Sampling and Document. The findings
show that the implementation and Systemic Functional Grammar. Systemic
Functional Grammar is the tecnique which makes easier to analyze. Thus, it can
be concluded that the the students’ short story there were used several types of
theme but the more appear are ideational/topical theme and textual theme with the
total number of occurrence 42 (47%) from 89 themes. And followed by the
ideational/topical theme with slight diversity, in only one theme with the total
number of occurrence 41 (46%) from 89 themes. It showed that the students’
short story using the structure that made relation between the sentences and used
less expression on the story because it only used 6 (7%) interpersonal theme from
89 themes. Those made the story in general text which the text is less expressions.
