Abstract:
This study focused on identifying the need of English vocabulary needed by
agriculture students. This study is aimed to knowing the vocabularies needed by
agriculture students horticulture major and students‟ perceptions about the
importance of English vocabulary needs for agriculture students. This study used
qualitative case study design. This research conducted at a vocational school in
Tasikmalaya in horticulture major. To collect the data, the researcher combined
data obtained from twenty-one participants consisting one of English teacher and
twenty agricultural students at horticulture major used semi-structure interview
and open-ended questionnaire. For analysis data interview, the researcher used
thematic analysis and the step for analyzed, the researcher conducted this
interview by recording audio by phone then the audio transcribe into written
form,coding data, and determine the theme research themes. Meanwhile, for
analyzed open-ended questionnaire the researcher analyzed and interpreting
subsequently. In doing analysis, the researcher give the code in participants
answer, arrange the data, and finally the researcher get the result of the conclusion
of the questionnaire. The results semi-structure interview showed that the English
vocabulary needed agricultural students there are English vocabulary collection of
specific terms for agriculturists, animal breeders, and in some fields of agriculture,
such as cultivate the plants, care the plants, agricultural equipments, or scientific
names of plants. Meanwhile, the result of open-ended questionnaire based on
students‟ perceive, showed that vocabulary for agriculture are important, because
by learning English vocabulary can increase students‟ knowledge especially
specific vocabulary, as well as learning English vocabulary for agriculture is
useful for their careers, especially communication and business. Finally, the
researcher provides the suggestions of the needs of vocational students, especially
of English vocabularies needed by agriculture students.
