Application Of Eucalyptus Oil Steam Therapy To Improve Airway Clearance In Patients With Respiratory System Disorders

Abstract

Respiratory system disorders can lead to ineffective airway clearance, characterized by secretion buildup, ineffective coughing, and decreased oxygen saturation. Eucalyptus oil steam therapy is a non-pharmacological intervention that has expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties, potentially helping to improve airway conditions. Objective:This literature review aims to determine the effect of eucalyptus oil steam therapy on ineffective airway clearance based on empirical studies from the last 6 years.Methods:This study is a literature review. Journal articles were obtained from the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases, focusing on studies published in English between 2019 and 2025. Article selection was carried out using the PRISMA method, and relevant keywords were used for article identification. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to select eligible articles. The review applied the DSVIA framework (Design, Subject, Variables, Instrument,Analysis).Results:A total of 9 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. All studies reported that eucalyptus oil steam therapy had a positive impact on improving airway clearance by reducing secretions, increasing the frequency of effective coughing, and improving oxygen saturation. Conclusion: Eucalyptus oil steam therapy is an effective non-pharmacological intervention to enhance airway clearance in patients with respiratory system disorders and can be considered in clinical nursing practice.
