dc.description.abstract ABSTRACT This paper deals with Vocational High School students’ self-efficacy in understanding English narrative text. This research was aimed at finding out the students’ perception towards their self-efficacy and investigating the effect of high and low self-efficacy in understanding English narrative text. This research employed a survey study by means of two data collection techniques, i.e. questionnaire and interview. The sample of this research consisted of 70 students of the tenth grade at a vocational high school in Ciamis. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed by using SPSS application to analyze the data. Meanwhile, the data from interview was analyzed by transcribing and interpreting the results from the students. The findings showed that the students have positive perceptions towards their self-efficacy. They believed in their capability of doing some particular tasks. The students perceived that they could finish their reading, understand the author’ thoughts when they were reading, and could identify the types of words in a narrative text. Furthermore, they believed in their capability of distinguishing the structure of narrative texts and feeling entertained when reading a narrative text. The results of the interview also showed that there were high and low categories of self-efficacy, although they were different from the way they do the effort, sometimes they had similarities in terms of their interest and opinion. Each student had different self-efficacy, high and low self-efficacy that influenced their learning achievement. In addition, it is recommended that further research concern the accurate measurement of self-efficacy from different aspects. Thus, the result will be more detailed. en_US
