dc.description.abstract This research focuses on extrinsic motivation; reward and punishment in language community interaction. This research is aimed at exploring kind of reward are appropriate to motivate students in language community interaction and kind of punishment are appropriate to motivate students in language community interaction. This research used a case study as the research design. The participants were 29 female students of class IX-A and one of language advisory councils. The research was conducted at one of boarding bilingual schools in Tasikmalaya. The data was collected by triangulation (observation, interview and questionnaire). The result of observation and interview were transcribed. Then frequencies and the percentage of the questionnaire data was calculated. Based on the findings, the observation data showed that the kinds of reward are appropriate to motivate students was in the form of praise or giving a positive feedback. Meanwhile, the kind of punishment are appropriate to motivate students was memorizing new vocabularies. Then, the results of the questionnaire data showed that there were 41.3% students who agree in the first statement. It means that almost half of students like to speak English. Then, there were 82.7% students or almost all students were strongly agree to the kind of reward in the form of an appreciation given by the teacher. In other hand, almost all students were motivated by that reward. And 65.5% students or most of students who were strongly agree with the kind of punishment in the form of memorizing was motivated students in English language interaction. So, the result of questionnaire was the same as the result of observations and interview en_US
